Green Apple Frings

One of my grandmother's is round and roly.
The other tall and string-bean lean.
The round one, inspiration behind my baking obsession.
Oft worried. Sometimes sighing. Always willing to hear my good gossip.
The tall one talks, but is quiet, too.
A farmer's wife. Mother of two handicapped children and three other's
who've been blessed {and impressed} by her constancy.
*
They are good grandma's.
Steady.
Dear.
Dependable.
I wouldn't trade them for wooden nickel's
or a golden buffalo chip.
*
Still, I've always thought it would
be nice to have a
sassy grandmother.
*
You know,
those little old ladies that are
little
and
old
and
whip-smart
with their
little voices
and
ne'er aged wit.
And, they
almost always
speak
with a
southern drawl.
*
Saying things like,
"Oh, honey. You ain't got problems.
Lemme tell you about probems..."
and
"With medication, a cold lasts one week,
without it, seven days."
*
I suppose
the only way I'll
get a granny
like that
in my family tree
is to become one
myself.
*
I figure I've got about
forty years
to perfect
my southern accent.

Green Apple Frings

If you enjoy indulging in All-American fare such as apple pie & a burger with onion rings, you'll love this simple twist on two classics. Slices of green apples are paired with sweet pancake batter and clumps of powdered sugar, then fried to crisp perfect. The tang of the softened apple, the sweet dusting of powdered sugar will remind you of summer days at the State Fair, dining on funnel cakes and corn on the cob. Positively perfect for breakfast, lunch or barbecue season.
*
*1/2 c. pancake mix
1/4 c. milk
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 T. brown sugar
1 c. powdered sugar
2 green apples
*
*Core & slice apples. In a medium bowl, mix together pancake mix, milk, cinnamon & sugar. Dip apple slices in pancake batter, then coat well will powdered sugar. Fry in a skillet of canola/vegetable oil heated to medium heat. Once browned, flip and cook other side, then transfer to a cooling rack. Serve dusted with powdered sugar. A great accompaniment to ham & potatoes, or black bean burgers.

A few weeks ago, I discovered these antique kitchen gadgets and was immediately smitten. If you can ignore the chintzy packaging, what you have are some adorably fun, old-fashioned tools that one simply must have in their kitchen. A heart spatula? porcelain handled donut cutter? malt measuring cup? heavyweight apple corer? Seriously, how have we all gotten along without these things for so long? That apple corer up there is how I got my Green Apple Frings to be adorably cored.

I want you to have some of these fabulously vintage tools in your kitchen, too! That's why I'll be snail mailing one of you a big, brown package of these great gadgets. Recipient will be chosen at random.

To get in on the gadget giveaway,just leave a comment on this post. {Isn't free stuff FUN?!}

I love the antique kitchen gadgets!! And I totally want to be a sassy grandma with pink hair (maybe even spiked!)

Both my grandmothers were sassy in completely different ways. One was stern on first impression, but had one-liners that KILLED. The other joined a theatre group in her 70's and made me and my cousin show her the latest dances everytime we were over.

Oh. And I've been craving something savoury, and this is heading in the right direction even though it's pancake-y and sugar-y. I'll be trying it, for certain. But first I might go get myself some real onion rings because you made me!

pick me pick me! I can't wait to have a new kitchen tool to inspire some cooking and bonding with my daughters....
though if it's not me...I get to visit the inlaws on the farm, and this tiny community has a hard ware store that is more like a department store in stock, but like a botique in size. they have the BEST kitchen tools, same ones grandma had. All metal, thick pastry cutters, donut dough cutters, fruit corers and pitters: Apple, cherry, peach, pear, WHO KNEW!
Hope you enjoy yours :)

I always hesitate to comment on your blog because I can never think of anything to say except, "Amazing! You are one of the most creative people ever! Did you know I am up for adoption? I LOVE your blog!" And after a few okay--many times of that you are probably thinking either--creepy stalker--or very unimaginitive human. Sad but true.

But, these tools are beyond great and will fit nicely in my drawerless garage door kitchen. Pick me!

I actually do have a sassy grandmother who upon seeing her new house, has famously been quoted saying "Roberts don't live in small spaces"

Roberts is her maiden name from over 50 years ago.

How's that for sassy?

Perhaps I should send her some apple rings to cheer her up!
