“Did you read Meanest Mom today?”

baby sis Holly often calls mid-morning, choking back tears of laughter, “She-is-sooo-hilarious.”

Thus we begin our adoring rants on the wit and wonderings of the wickedly wondrous, Jana.

*

When I learned she was about to have herself a birthday I declared it a mighty good time to celebrate all that The Meanest Mom means to so many of us.

*

Of course, being the hard working mama she is, she couldn’t possibly commit to the lot of us simply praising her baked effigy. Nay. She wanted to step it up a notch. Do it right. Recreate her own cupcake for her own birthday in her own kitchen surrounded by her own brood of babbling babes.

*

Now might be a good time to mention the email in which she assured me that there was

“no earthly way” she’d be able to pull the recipe off.

*

Did she do it? CLICK HERE to see.

While the cupcakes themselves were a fairly straightforward take on the divinely delicious Devil’s Food Cake, moist and black and full of flavor, I’m willing to admit the white chocolate cake toppers might prove rather tricky. But….aren’t they cute? Pain is beauty, ladies. Pain is beauty.

I suppose now would be a good time to mention how cute I think JANA’s cupcake topper turned out. Isn’t she a doll? However, am I the only one to note the frightening similarity between my cupcake topper and the late King of Pop? Gadzooks.

Regardless the amount of foundation I appear to have slathered, I’m always up for a tasty shindig, and so think we shouldn’t waste another minute of party time.

Welcome The Meanest Mom’s Birthday Cupcake Recipe!

Here’s to you, Jana…

Ready for a wee bit of baked good education? The trick behind devil’s food cake is to use boiling water, cocoa powder and baking soda. Armed with such information, I headed to the kitchen and worked a few favorite ingredients together to make this moist, flavorful cupcake which is sure to entice even the meanest moms to spoil their wee darlings sick as the whole family gobbles the goodies for breakfast, lunch or dessert. Really, who needs a well balanced meal with such wickedness waiting to be gulped into your intestinals? Let the reign of dark cake begin.

1 egg

2 egg whites

1 1/4 c. sugar

1/2 c. butter

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. vinegar

1/2 tsp. salt

3/4 c. cocoa

1 c. flour

1/2 c. boiling water

1/2 tsp. almond or vanilla flavoring

In a large bowl, combine eggs, sugar, and butter. Beat until light and whippy, about 4 minutes. Add siad, vinegar, salt and cocoa, beat until mixed in. Add flour, water and flavoring. Beat just until mixed. Do not overbeat. Spoon into cupcake wrappers and bake at 350 degrees for 24-27 minutes. LOW ALTITUDE BAKERS: Be sure you double the baking powder amount and add 3 tbsp. more of flour to keep your cuppies light and fluffy.

Fannie Farmer’s Seven Minute Frosting

1 1/2 c. sugar

1/4 tsp. cream of tartar

1/8 tsp. salt

2 egg whites

1/4 c. water

2 tsp vanilla or 1/2 tsp. almond extract

Mix sugar, cream of tartar, salt, egg whites and water in a pot. Place it over a pot or bowl of simmering water and begin beating the ingredients with an electric mixer. (Yes, I know this will feel uncomfortably similar to blow drying your hair in the bathtub, but do it nevertheless. It’s safe and makes the most magnificent frosting.) Beat until frosting stands in peaks, about 7 minutes, no more. Remove from the heat and contunue to beat until thick enough to spread. Add the vanilla and any paste icing coloring before spreading. This dries out quickly, so if you’re not serving it with in a couple of hours, be sure to cover and refrigerate it until ready to serve.

Melty Mama Toothpickies

1 c. White Chocolate Melts

Flat toothpicks

Various other colored melties

Heat a small pan over medium-low heat on your stove. Working quickly, press the “peak” part of the melty to the warmed bottom of the pan. Once the tip has been slightly melted, press the flat part of a toothpick into the melted part, then set aside and allow to cool. Once cool, decorate with other melted colors by piping them from the snipped edges of a plastic bag.

As a party favor, I offer these outtakes from

TheMeanestMom meets ConversationsWithACupcake

Are YOU a mean mom?

I’d love to hear your most devilish tales of motherhood. Do tell.

…and, know you’re in good company.

My good Holly called as I was cutting my 6-year-olds hair this week. Our fine sisterly chat was stilted when my son started banshee screaming as I delicately snipped and scissored his locks. Before long, sis stopped talking and asked–what are you doing to him?!

I am a visitor from the Meanest Mom. I love the decorations! And the commentary made me laugh like a little girl. You asked what our meanest mom moments were? This is a post I did a while back that'll give you an idea of what my kids go through.

Aren't all moms ultimately mean? When my boys say, "You're mean," I just tell them "I can be meaner." That seems to deflate them!

The meanest thing I've done? There's probably a bunch to choose from. Banning gum (because I kept finding it in clothes in the dryer–like baseball uniform);the only way they were to be allowed to chew it again was to learn how to repeal a bill; or making my son write 100 times that he would not provoke, incite or encourage his brothers to out-of-control behavior. I could probably write a book–maybe singing in the car?

I love the cupcakes! Aren't friends great:)Friendly, healthy, taunting competition is so much fun!!!
