I remember just after 9/11.
The day after, two days after, a week after.
I remember being sad sick when I thought about the state of New York City.
I remember praying. A lot.
I remember being afraid to get the mail.
(You never know about that whole anthrax shenanigan.
And, anyway stay-at-home moms living in the middle of Colorado
were very likely targets for terror attacks. You know.)
*
Even more than feeling afraid, I remember
A powerful sense of togetherness.
I remember praying,
and knowing that my prayer was united
with tens of thousands of others just like it across the nation and world.
I remember emailing friends, a worried and wondering "Is all okay?"
And, I remember them emailing back, asking the same of me.
Strangers nodded gentle hello's on the streets.
Schoolchildren offered pounds of pennies into donation bins.
My own children and I made red, white,& blue ribbons,
and stood in an upstairs wing of the Chapel Hills Mall,
handing them out to anyone who would pin them on their lapel.
*
"How much do you want for this?" Inquired one shopper, a scruffy man in tan work clothes.
"Nothing." I responded. "It's just a gift."
Tears seeped into the basin of his eyes.
He tried to speak but changed his mind and nodded instead.
Pulling his wallet out, he handed me a twenty-dollar bill.
"Keep giving," He whispered in a choked voice, "God Bless."

Wouldn't we ever and always avoid tragedies of any sort--
be them man-made or mother nature?
And yet, broken somehow breeds beauty when placed in the hands of the whole.
Strength and unselfishness and resilience and humanity
rise to the surface, creating a new foundation on which the devastated can build.
