Afterschool Snack: Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies

First day of school for us today. Don’t ask me why. You’d think the people that make school schedules would understand that school shouldn’t start until summertime has been fully and properly relished. What sort of childhood must those legislators have endured to insist us back into desks before mid-September? I shudder to think. School in August? Pish.

And yet, we are back. I must say, it’s something of a miracle. Firstly, a miracle because I actually allowed my kiddos to trot their way to classes. There is a wild-mad part of me that wants to cling to them like a koala bear hugs a eucalyptus. It’s hard to see those sweet kids away for the day, moving from grade-to-grade, growing up at light speed.

Mostly, however, it’s a miracle we got to school today because we were in the ER last night until nearly midnight. Child #2 has been playing host to a nasty flu for six days straight. Her temperature spiked last night, just as the pediatrician’s office closed, leaving us the rare and wonderful opportunity to sit in pleather waiting seats with a gabillion other sick people. {Pondering: Why is the ER nothing like ER? George Clooney, dag-nab you for not becoming a real-live doctor in Colorado Springs.}

So we sat for hours and hours, waiting and watching the strangest, most fascinating emergencies walk through the sliding doors of the hospital. Staying up well past our proper bedtime. Wishing we had quarters for the vending machine. As it turned out, my little Becca is fine. She’s missing today to finish up her healing, but we’ll be back to chip-chopping it in no time at all. Which is more I can say for the woman who walked through the ER doors as we were leaving, forehead bloody, with three sanitary pads tacked around her head. {Pondering: ?!?!}

To prepare for the triumphant return of our school-goers, Bec and I will be watching obscene amounts of Wizards of Waverly Place reruns, and making p.e.r.f.e.c.t chocolate chip cookies as an afterschool snack. You’re going to want to make them, too. Unless, of course, you’re heading to the ER. Then, you’re just going to want a handful of quarters and a hearty stash of sanitary napkins.

    Wow you guys start back early. You need to write your representative a letter about that :) We start back on the 25th. I really do hope that #2 is feeling much better soon. Your recipe looks scrumptious love, the monkeys always enjoy testing them out. They'll do flips over these cookies.

    i am so relieved to hear Bella Becca is on the mend! I am empathizing with you on this end, this has been my 5th trip to the dr. in 3 1/2 weeks – my lil bambino just can't get a break…i'm hoping he's not allergic to this medication, guess we'll find out in the next day or two – I am so wishing dinner was already done, I feel a little deflated! but your cookies perked me right back up – is there anything the perfect choco chip cookie can't cure? i think not….

    Just took these out of the oven, and they are AMAZING! At least a dozen of them are gone already-right out of the oven. Thank you so much for the recipe!

    I hate back to school as much as I feel I'm going to love it this year because I'll get a few precious moments alone with my younger two. I hate it because it means winter is coming to freeze the life out of my garden.

    Glad to hear everything's okay with Becca, and the cookies look fantastic! I'm going to have to give them a whirl when my kids go back.

    I hope our daughter is feeling better. How scary! These chocolate chip cookies would be very welcome after-school treats at my house. They looks so soft and tender.

    Made these yesterday. I doubled because I needed a lot and wasn't sure how many this recipe made. Well, I ended up with 11 dozen or so. I used a melon baller so they all would be of uniform size and it was a quick and easy scoop. It's a good thing these cookies are yummy since I now have them coming out y ears. :)
