Homemade Kiss Gloss

During a girls weekend last week, my daughter Becca got it in her head that we should make homemade lipgloss. She wanted something fancy to share with the cousins for the holidays. So we tromped it to two craft stores and one grocery store and pulled together everything we needed to make a half dozen batches of holiday flavored lip gloss. Ca-ute, right?

We grabbed a bunch of bead organizers for our lip gloss containers at JoAnn. A pack of 25 containers cost $9.99, but they were 25% off for the holiday weekend, so we actually only put out $7.50 for 25 containers. Dang good deal there.

Oil based candy flavoring and a few drops of our favorite essential oils (lemon, peppermint, ginger) offered up some super rad flavors. We stirred together candy cane, mistletoe (strawberry plus peppermint), lemon drop, gingerbread (ginger plus cinnamon), watermelon (whatever, that is so a holiday flavor), and butter rum.

My favorite is butter rum. It’s like having a butterscotch candy stuck on your lips for an hour straight. Bring it.

The labels were created from 1 1/2″ round Avery stickers. We had to use our bare hands to slice the labels to a smaller size. And, we are the last family in the known universe to have a black-only printer. So the labels turned out kinda bland, but my little ladies were pretty delighted, regardless. They sniffed every gloss before twisting lids firmly in place, then toted them to Utah to dispense amongst their girl cousins. And I think Papa got a kiss gloss, too. But we won’t tell a soul about how fruity delicious his lips smelled when we smooched him goodbye on our way back to Colorado.

In other news, I consoled myself through the Thanksgiving stomach flu with Netflix episodes of Sister Wives. Why didn’t you people tell me this show was addictive?

Inexcusable. But I love you enough to give you kiss gloss anyway.

You’re gonna need soft lips for all the gossip we’ll be chatting over now that I’m in the know with my new favorite show. Gracious. I love Christine. And Meri. And Janelle rocks. Sometimes Robyn is so nice I want to pluck my eyelashes.

Go put on lip gloss. We gotta talk.

P.S. Next to Sister Wives, my other current obsession is Nicole glitter polish by OPI. You can buy it at Walgreens and Walmart. It’s so pretty it’ll make you want to do push-ups just so you can admire your fingernails.

Homemade Kiss Gloss

This homemade lipgloss is my favorite recipe because it uses inexpensive "ingredients" that are easy to find. Each little batch turns out a slightly sweet, candy-flavored lipgloss (you can sniff it, but it's not for eating!) that feels splendid on the lips and makes every kiss taste delish!

Ingredients:

1 teaspoon paraffin wax
4 teaspoons coconut oil
4 teaspoons petroleum jelly
4 white or pink (or whatever color you like) candy melts
1/2 teaspoon oil-based candy flavoring

Directions:

Grate the wax into a ziploc freezer bag. Add the coconut oil, petroleum jelly, candy melts and the flavoring. Place the bag in a bowl of very hot water and allow the ingredients to melt together. Massage the bag a bit to mix the ingredients together. Snip a corner from the bag and squeeze the ingredients into small containers (we used sterilized bead holders purchased from JoAnn). Pop your lip gloss containers into the fridge to cool completely. Gift and enjoy!

YES! My nailpolish question, answered! (I might’ve squealed a little. lol) And I don’t think your kissgloss (which is SO what I’m calling it now) are bland – I think they look minimalist and super chic!

In the post you mentioned essential oils, but they are not in the recipe?
Just wondering if the oils are essential (pun intended) or if they just give the gloss more flavor?

I have the same questions as above. Essential oils, do you just add them in, candy melts, are they just at the craft store, and how much does each little baggy make?

This is so exciting! I have always wanted to make home made lip gloss and now I have something really fun to do with my daughter for her friends.

    thanks!

Looking forward to trying this recipe. I made lip balm in a pharmacy compounding class that I love and need to be able to make more. This recipe is much easier with simpler ingredients. I wonder if it’s possible to get vitamin E to add. Just a caution to anyone using the oil flavorings such as cinnamon or peppermint: use them very sparingly or you could end up literally burning your lips. I mixed chocolate with marshmallow and a tiny bit of cinnamon oil and it is fantastic!

Is there a template for printing the labels. I found 1″ labels on ebay that can go through an inkjet or laser printer but I will need some sort of template. I love this idea! Great Christmas idea <3 <3

    • Brooke replied: — December 2nd, 2011 @ 12:04 am

I didn’t make a template. I just use Word to make a nice, big “KISS” then added text boxes here and there with the titles and names. I actually kind of wish we’d just used Sharpie markers to handwrite. It would have looked so chic!

Good luck! I’d love to see your final product!

I love making gloss – but I personally like it without petroleum jelly. There are plenty of plant based more eco-friendly ingredients to use.

    • Brooke replied: — December 3rd, 2011 @ 7:45 pm

Kelly, yes, you’re right. Though you can most definitely make it without petroleum jelly, I was really going for a “recipe” that used super simple and inexpensive ingredients that most people could quickly find. You could find yourself running all over town for some of the eco-friendly recipes….which absolutely is worth it. But, thought we’d go quick, cheap, and easy for this one. Thanks for your comment! XO

I’ve been looking for gifts to make for the ladies this holiday and this is perfect! I, like a couple of the other readers, would like to know more about the essential oils. I have experience working with them, but didn’t see where they were included in the recipe.

Also, the candy melts you’re talking about here….do you mean actual candy? I never would have thought to include something like that in a lip gloss.

    • Brooke replied: — December 3rd, 2011 @ 7:43 pm

So a drop of essential oil can be used as a flavoring, in place of the candy flavoring. Just a drop, though, because it can be really strong!

As for the candy melts, a single actual candy melt (which can be purchased in the cake decorating section of most craft stores) adds just a touch of color and sweetness to the gloss. Brilliant! Good luck!

This is an awesome idea and can’t wait to try this. To all the users above. Candy Melts are in the Baking/Candy making section at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. they come in a small bag and you can get them in any color. And if you have some left over after making lip gloss, they are delicious!!! :)

Chrisitine, it’s the coconut oil that makes it melt at room temperature if you are in a warm climate. Try adding a little more of the wax. I used to make these a couple of decades back and they were very popular. In the UK coconut oil is not really seen in the cooking oil section but you can get it in a well known drugstore chain, usually in the haircare section. For vitamin E, try wheatgerm oil.

Good luck, Michelle! Try making it with beeswax, instead of parafin and you’re lip gloss stash will be as good as golden! Beeswax can be purchased at Whole Foods and other health stores, btw!

While this is a really cute idea, please be careful about calling one of your flavors “mistletoe” lest people (children, especially) get the idea that the plant itself is edible – some varieties of mistletoe are poisonous.
