Homemade Kiss Gloss

During a girls weekend last week, my daughter Becca got it in her head that we should make homemade lipgloss. She wanted something fancy to share with the cousins for the holidays. So we tromped it to two craft stores and one grocery store and pulled together everything we needed to make a half dozen batches of holiday flavored lip gloss. Ca-ute, right?

We grabbed a bunch of bead organizers for our lip gloss containers at JoAnn. A pack of 25 containers cost $9.99, but they were 25% off for the holiday weekend, so we actually only put out $7.50 for 25 containers. Dang good deal there.
Oil based candy flavoring and a few drops of our favorite essential oils (lemon, peppermint, ginger) offered up some super rad flavors. We stirred together candy cane, mistletoe (strawberry plus peppermint), lemon drop, gingerbread (ginger plus cinnamon), watermelon (whatever, that is so a holiday flavor), and butter rum.
My favorite is butter rum. It’s like having a butterscotch candy stuck on your lips for an hour straight. Bring it.
The labels were created from 1 1/2″ round Avery stickers. We had to use our bare hands to slice the labels to a smaller size. And, we are the last family in the known universe to have a black-only printer. So the labels turned out kinda bland, but my little ladies were pretty delighted, regardless. They sniffed every gloss before twisting lids firmly in place, then toted them to Utah to dispense amongst their girl cousins. And I think Papa got a kiss gloss, too. But we won’t tell a soul about how fruity delicious his lips smelled when we smooched him goodbye on our way back to Colorado.

In other news, I consoled myself through the Thanksgiving stomach flu with Netflix episodes of Sister Wives. Why didn’t you people tell me this show was addictive?
Inexcusable. But I love you enough to give you kiss gloss anyway.
You’re gonna need soft lips for all the gossip we’ll be chatting over now that I’m in the know with my new favorite show. Gracious. I love Christine. And Meri. And Janelle rocks. Sometimes Robyn is so nice I want to pluck my eyelashes.
Go put on lip gloss. We gotta talk.

P.S. Next to Sister Wives, my other current obsession is Nicole glitter polish by OPI. You can buy it at Walgreens and Walmart. It’s so pretty it’ll make you want to do push-ups just so you can admire your fingernails.
Homemade Kiss Gloss
This homemade lipgloss is my favorite recipe because it uses inexpensive "ingredients" that are easy to find. Each little batch turns out a slightly sweet, candy-flavored lipgloss (you can sniff it, but it's not for eating!) that feels splendid on the lips and makes every kiss taste delish!
Ingredients:
1 teaspoon paraffin wax
4 teaspoons coconut oil
4 teaspoons petroleum jelly
4 white or pink (or whatever color you like) candy melts
1/2 teaspoon oil-based candy flavoringDirections:
Grate the wax into a ziploc freezer bag. Add the coconut oil, petroleum jelly, candy melts and the flavoring. Place the bag in a bowl of very hot water and allow the ingredients to melt together. Massage the bag a bit to mix the ingredients together. Snip a corner from the bag and squeeze the ingredients into small containers (we used sterilized bead holders purchased from JoAnn). Pop your lip gloss containers into the fridge to cool completely. Gift and enjoy!

Love this idea!! We made lipgloss for Xmas this year using the vaseline and it was a mess. I would love to make these for my daughter’s birthday party this year. Does each batch make 6 glosses?
LeAnn on January 4, 2012 at 8:16 pm
Wondering what kind of candy melts you are talking about?
Alex on January 18, 2012 at 2:46 pm
Petroleum causes breast cancer. A better idea is to use only vegetable base ingredients.

I saw this on Pinterest and thought this would be awesome to make. Thank you for the receipe.

What are candy melts? and Where do you get them?
Leah on January 24, 2012 at 1:40 pm
1/2 tsp Seems like a lot of flavoring for such a small batch, especially if mint or cinnamon where used. I use 1/4 tsp. oil based flavoring to when making flavored angel food cake.

I like that this is a simple recipe; however, I think petroleum products should be avoided at all costs… they are a strain on our environment and proven to be detrimental to our health…. I have a friend who passed away from breast cancer in July of last year and her oncologists all warned against using petrol products…. vegetable based, although more expensive, is the only way to go.

hi brooke. just found your lovely blog. love this gloss idea!

CUTE idea! Thanks for sharing. But no petroleum. Yuck stuff for your body!
Natalie on January 31, 2012 at 11:52 am
I suggest using lanolin rather than petroleum because it’s natural. It’s better for you and the environment. This is a great idea though!
Oh, and yes, what candy melts… like the chocolate type candy melts?
Casey on February 2, 2012 at 7:44 pm
What is paraffin wax? What type do you recommend?
Brooke replied: — February 2nd, 2012 @ 8:41 pm
It’s the sort of wax you use for candlemaking. There aren’t too many brands available, so just use it if you find it. And, make sure you check out the all new and improved version of Kiss Gloss (which uses beeswax and no petroleum jelly) at http://www.cheekykitchen.com/2012/01/kiss-gloss-revisited.html

This is great. My daughter and I are going to make them for valentines instead of giving candy! I am not a fan of candy. For the boys we found little black jars to keep that manly touch. Here in Wisconins you can NEVER have enough chapstick or lip balm. I love the Black lables, looks clean and sharpe, no color needed.

Thats really an amaizing and funny to do idea… Iam impressed:)

I get most of the ingredients but what are candy melts??? Ive seen others ask this same question but know one is answering them. Please, what are candy melts???
Brooke replied: — February 15th, 2012 @ 9:45 pm
Candy melts can be found in the cake baking aisle of most grocery stores. They are sold in large bags and look like giant chocolate chips, however come in a variety of sizes. Happy Kiss Glossing!

I want you to know i made these little glosses. Love em! Soooooo easy to make. I purchased the small bead containers you talked about and this recipe makes exactly 6. I have enough product to make these little glossy gems for 2 to 3 yrs to come. The only thing i will have to purchase is more containers and maybe different flavors.
Thanks so much for sharing this wonder and easy recipe. I will be making this apart of my gift giving for yrs to come.

I’d use beeswax for a more natural and healthy choice. It’s a natural healer as well.

Yes! Great idea!

Totally doing this as a ‘mommy favor’ for my son’s 1st birthday! Question…how did you sterilize the bead containers? I’m thinking boil, but that seems like it would melt them. Also…all the ingredients were from a craft store, right? Thanks!!! Love it!

Just wondering if you have a template that you could send me for your kiss stickers. They are so cute!
Teresa on April 8, 2012 at 3:45 pm
Hi. These look like they would be so much fun! I’m just wondering when you say Candy Melts are you talking about the actual little round candy that comes in a bag at Michaels or Joanns for melting into molds? I think this would be a great project for my Girl Scout Troop!
Rachel on April 17, 2012 at 7:58 pm
Petroleum jelly doesn’t cause breast cancer they have doneaton of that show it is ok to use on your skin

I am Totally doing this for my daughters sweet 16 party! Thanks so much for sharing the project! I may have to think of a different name than kiss gloss though, Dad might not like the idea of all those kids (boys) getting the idea of kisses in their heads ha ha ha ha

Gorgeous photos of cute product. But everyone is overlooking the most obvious and important aspect of your post…..the addiction to Sister Wives! Yep, I’m officially outing myself as an addict. It’s like a car crash and I just can’t look away. I love Meri and Christine, and Janelle is good value too. Kody, his hair and his constant need to be the centre of attention seem like it made Polygamy a fit for him. Robyn seems sweet but not as fun as the other girls – she’s still probably feeling her way. I don’t like the episodes where it’s directed/edited to make it look like huge drama (eg OMG is Robyn going to lose the baby *GASP*; the panicked move to Nevada with police sirens in hearing distance as they race to pack the truck…when the sirens had nothing to do with them). I thinkk the characters as they are and the look into this family’s normal daily living is interesting enough. Yeah, I know, back to the lip gloss! Mmmmm, shiny, glossy fun in the making. Thank you!

OMG I LOVE SISTER WIVES, I follow them all on Twitter, fb anywhere I can if I lived in Vegas I’d prob be considered a stalker lol — I love Meri – kinda feeling bad for Christine right now (only cos my hubby and I are going thru some issues right now and I can sympathize with her) — OH wait this is about the lip gloss – love it my little one loves to copy me and this is a safe way for her to wear “mommy’s lips” without all the crap that’s in the lipsticks I wear – can’t wait to try it this weekend.

You’re not the only family left with a black only printer. On a happier note, this looks fun and easy and awesome! I’ve only recently become aware of some of the nasty stuff they put in cosmetics, so I’m excited to know i can take a shot at my own. Thanks so much!

Also, does this recipe make all 25 pots?

I used ingredients from both this recipe and your new recipe plus I improvised with lanisoh: I used lanisoh instead of petroleum jelly, beeswax instead of paraffin wax, and I didnt use candy melts I used the tip of a lipstick for color, I put them all in a saucepan to melt and then transferred them into little containers. I put the containers into the fridge to harden.
The color came out BEAUTIFUL and the gloss smells like honey! It feels more like a lip balm than a lip gloss but I love the feel of it very soft and luxurious :) thank you for these recipes I will be making more of this awesome lip gloss!

Do you mean the breatfeeding cream, Lansinoh? or just lanolin in general? How much did you use? Did you use the same amount as the original recipe stated, but just substitued, or did you have to alter the amount? I’d love to try this for my daughter’s bday goody bags!

Thank you so much for this idea. My tester will be my Husband so all of my friends can have kissable lips this summer.
vicki on June 28, 2012 at 10:27 pm
Tried this and love the feel on my lips but is it suppose to be runny, it was fine right out of the fridge but then back to room temp and was runny. Did I do it wrong or can I add something to firm it up some. Thanks
