So... when I first saw this cake on your blog nine long months ago I knew I was going to have it for my birthday. I even sent my sister the link & told her she was going to make it for me.

About a month ago I sent her a reminder. Last week I printed off the recipe, even figuring in the altitude adjustments for her. Just tonight I made up the shopping list to be sure she has all the ingredients, and tomorrow I'll go to Trader Joe's and pick up what we still need.

Because this Sunday? I'M EATING THIS CAKE. A LOT OF IT. And I CANNOT wait!

Nine long months... It's almost as exciting as having a baby, only chocolatey.

My friends and I made this cake for my birthday. While absolutely delicious in taste, the consistency was more brownie-like than fudgy and it did not quite resemble your divine pictures. What did I do wrong? (I did make the changes for low altitude.)

I made this cake for Labor Day and it came out perfect. No problems (well except for my small town not having marscapone cheese and having to call a friend in the big city to bring me some.) The cake was so rich, I made all of my friends take a piece home so that it would not be in the house.

Being so rich, this cake will easily feed 12 people. Thanks for the great recipe.

brooke, I would love to make this for my husband's birthday in a couple weeks and I was thinking of making it or parts of it a day ahead. Do you think it would work if I make it ahead or would it be better if I made the cake part the day before and wrap it and chill it and then mkae the mousse and frosting and put it together the day of the party? (did that make sense?) maybe I should do a practice cake and give it away...

anyway, just thought I'd ask your professional oppinion:)

YUM, YUM, YUM!!!!!!! I finally got around to making this AMAZING cake. It came out great, very rich, good for sharing with good friends. My frosting needed to be chilled after mixing to get it to the best speading consistancy. Of course, it is very hot and humid in the Northeast today, so that didn't help. But the cake looked great and tasted even better.

I had the same problem as another reader. My cakes came out os the oven fairly level, but both layers quickly sank in the middle while cooling. What would cause this? Also, my frosting was to thin, almost pourable. Did I not let the chocalet and cream chill long enough? It did taste great, but I would like to know how to fix the problems I had. One another thing, I think the olive oil taste is pretty strong. Can I use a lighter oil? Thanks for the advice.

Ok, you may have already answered this question, so I apologize for not reading through all 100 coments, but I made this delicious cake today and my cakes were sunk in in the middle. Why is that? Is my over cooking too hot? I did double the baking powder because I am at around 750 ft elevation. Maybe my baking powder is not good?

The cake was still yummy and I just filled the hole with a no bake cheesecake mixture then the Mousse and the frosting. It was soooo yummy! But I'd like to figure out what went wrong with the baking.

I am baking this cake today for my birthday (tomorrow) and was wondering about the mascarpone. At the grocery store they had 2 options for mascarpone. Tiramisu Mascarpone (which has coffee in it, but specified that it was for chocolate cakes and stuff...) or regular mascarpone, which specified that it was for dips and spreads. Which kind should I use? I bought the regular kind, no thanks on the coffee. Though I'm sure it would add a very nice flavor.
What do you think?

I tried this recipe - you are a genious!!! I have NEVER been one to bake, and I can only think of one other picture that inspired me to do so.

I had one heck of a time figuring out that my Walmart didn't have mascarpone (live in a small town with no fun bakeries) and I used whipped cream cheese and it was still delish!

After taking one look at this lovely dessert I actually made it. I had trouble with the cake part but that was due to wrong sized pans and lack of experience on my part. To any gluten free-people: I used Pamela’s mix with three eggs (after my failed attempt at the from-scratch cake). It turned out marvelously and was scrumptious!

i made this cake tonight and it was delicious! thank you so much for the recipe! unfortunately my cake totally fell apart and the mousse made it slide...it was a disaster! but i think my house was too hot (we live in AZ). so, while it didn't look delectable, it tasted divine!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your advice!! I'm sorry I missed it sooner, but I worked all night last night & slept all day today (I'm a nurse "on the side" when I'm not raising my 4.8 kids!). I truly appreciate you takng the time to answer my question!

I did use the same Ghiardelli bittersweet (60% cacao)chips for the frosting...maybe I overcooked it! It still tastes amazing, & as I mentioned, my kids never have a problem with leftover frosting! It set up well in the fridge, but it just wasn't quite as spreadable as I'm used to w/ buttercreams. My butter may have been a bit over-softened, as well, but I'll probably get a chance to try it again next month when my 3rd child turns 4!

Thank you again for this amazing recipe, & for your guidance. We have been caring for my FIL as he recovers from back surgery, & he (like Nie) needs to regain some lost weight--even when he asks for "just a sliver", this cake is so rich & so TALL, his sliver must certainly be helping!

First off, I'm tickled the cake turned out for you. We here devoured every slice & my hubby who is anti-chocolate was divinely in love with the recipe. Yummaroo.

As for the frosting, you don't want to boil the chocolate and cream. Just stir it until it's melted together and pudding-y then place it in the fridge to cool. It should harden up nicely. Then, you remove it from the fridge and beat in the butter and powdered sugar.

One thing I ought to note is ganache is LARGELY affected by the quality of chocolate you use, so definitely don't scrimp. I used Ghirradeli's cacao bittersweet chips. They're fat and smooth and make a beautiful (and delectable) frosting.

What a fabulous recipe! This cake is amazing!! I made it for my youngest's 2nd birthday yesterday, & 7 of us ate some, sent some to work w/ hubby today, & there's still half of the cake left!! I garnished it w/ fresh strawberries, which were the perfect complement to all the lovely chocolate...thank you for this incredible recipe!

My question: When I made the frosting, I think I messed up the ganache--could you give me a bit of direction? The flavor is wonderful, but the consistency was a bit more like an over-thickened pudding than a spreadable frosting. When cooking the cream & chocolate together to make a "thick ganache", should it be boiling? Mine had just started to boil when I remeoved it from the heat, but despite adding an extra cup of powdered sugar, (over the max suggested), it never became quite spreadable. It's delicious, & I have nearly 2 cups left (which my kids will enjoy all week on graham crackers!)

By the way--my whole family are "anit-cake"...we make birthday brownies or birthday pies, but this was a hit, & EVERYONE ate it!!
